Born from a lifelong love of books.
Tattooed Dead Trees isn't just a bookshop — it's the dream of someone who has spent their whole life with a book in hand, convinced that every community deserves a place where stories live and neighbors gather.
Why Clinton. Why now.
Every reader has that moment — the one where a book changes everything. For us, those moments happened over and over again, in libraries, in used bookshops, in the margins of dog-eared paperbacks. We've been chasing that feeling our whole lives.
Clinton, Iowa is a community full of curious minds, creative spirits, and people who deserve more than an algorithm deciding what they should read next. We're opening Tattooed Dead Trees because we believe a great independent bookshop can be the heart of a town — a place to discover, to linger, to belong.
The name? It's our love letter to the humble, irreplaceable book. Every printed page is a tattooed dead tree — marked up, given meaning, made permanent. We think that's worth celebrating.
A few things we stand for
Community first
This shop exists for Clinton. We'll stock local voices, host neighborhood events, and make sure everyone feels welcome the moment they walk in.
No algorithms
Every book on our shelves is hand-picked by a real person who has read it, loved it, and thinks you might too.
Every reader belongs
Whether you read one book a year or one a week — whether you love romance, sci-fi, poetry, or picture books — there's a shelf here with your name on it.
Books change things
We believe in the quiet, stubborn power of a good story to shift perspectives, build empathy, and make the world a little more interesting.
